Sniffles

I woke up yesterday with a runny nose and today is worse... I think there will be no fun runs today. Being healthy seems important for a good run.  I'm on a strict diet of soup, hot tea and NyQuill 'til then.

Anyone have a good cold remedy to suggest?

Splinting shins

Yesterday I went into the local Fleet Feet.

Overpriced shoes are not normally my calling, but I had to get my arches evaluated. The lady was making small talk. It was a good thing it was a lady for two reasons: The guy working had a ring on his left hand and I hadn't shaved in a couple days. Anyway she told me I was starting out too fast with how far I was going. She warned me to slow down on how far so that I wouldn't get shin splints and longer term I was looking at stress fractures in 6 months. Gotta love free running advice from someone over 30.

So far here are my stats (Shout out to the makers of the Nike+ app for iPhone for helping me track my progress!):
2.60 miles in 34:01 min = 13'03"/mi (9/14).
2.60 miles in 34:01 min = 13'03"/mi (9/14).
4.47 miles in 56:41 min = 12'39"/mi (Tuesday).
2.00 miles in 22:36 min = 11'16"/mi (Thursday).
and today was 2.61 miles in 30:00 min = 11'43"/mi.

So in 8 days, I've effectively shaved 4 minutes off my 2.6 mile. Also that means in little over a week I've burned 1,551 calories. Uhhhh why do I love beer so much.

So I wasn't really having any pain other than finding some long lost muscles and ligaments until today. I thought my shins were going to break in half.

Meanwhile back at the arches... Mine were perfectly normal. Thank you dance and yoga! I knew you'd pay off one day. And thanks to the nice lady at Fleet Feet. Got some new shoes ordered. I've been working with some Nike Airs and they're pretty good, but hopefully when my new ones come in I'll see a difference in the splinting shins.

And I promise I'll go a little easier this week.

Nike Running Shorts v. Compression Pants

The last time my thighs didn't touch when walking, jogging, running or really just standing around was around age 12. Skin and bones. Then I got everything... and some touching thighs. I would say thanks mom, but we all know I got it from my daddy.

So when your thighs touch on the reg, not only is being a model out of the picture (Sorry Torrid, I'm not interested) but you have to reconsider when you want to run in your favorite Nike running shorts (Norts).

Shout out to all my girls who's thighs don't touch! Go have fun modeling and looking great in a bathing suit. I'll work on my running form.

Now, norts are really great for sweating in if you're working around the house or garden. Or if you're a sorority girl and you want to make all the dudes in your class think you actually work out. Or being seen at night if you chose neon. Norts are terrible for keeping your thighs apart.

Let's talk about chaffing. Well... on second thought, let's not. That's just gross.

So I went on a mission yesterday to find some compression pants or capris. Thinking this would hopefully combat the problem. Well, I'm not trying to pay over $20 for some pants that I'm just going to sweat in so... MISSION FAILED.

Anyone know somewhere to find cheap compression pants? Turkey creek is a no-go.

Over and out.

Horror movies, horror-scopes and horror-runs

There are three things that I can't take because my heart rate gets too high.

The first is horror movies. I guess it all goes back to my dad loving Stephen King. Books, movies... whatever. All I remember is the music from IT and I'm done for the day. Bed time. Nightmares. Not fun.

Next is a bad Horoscope. Today is an off day, so I decided to check my horoscope to see what mood I'll be in tomorrow. It reads as follows:

Saturday, September 22, 2012 - Your friends and family may be hard to read today, leaving you uncertain about their place in your current plans. Unfortunately, your ideas might not be as crystal clear as you thought, creating problems you haven't yet considered. Don't blame your lack of confidence on anyone else or you will just drift farther away from your real goals. Accepting responsibility for your attitude now inspires you to do something about it.

I don't even want to talk about it... Moving on...

...To night runs.

Three days ago, I ran 4 miles in 50 minutes. That's 12:50 min/mile (silent victory vibration). It was great! Refreshing, goal-hitting, WHATSUPYO great. But I ran on Farragut's Greenbelt, it's similar to the Greenway in Murfreesboro. Outdoorsy, not very well lit, but paved so that at night you are more sure footed than if you were running a trail.

Night running is terrifying!!

At first, when the sun starts going down, you think to yourself, "Man, God is good! This is so pretty! Who knew that periwinkle and orange sorbet went together so well... oh that's where Clemson got their colors.. I get it now..."

But then. It all goes black.

And that's when you run into spider-webs. That's when leaves feel like the spiders. And when your blood pressure skyrockets because you're afraid you're going to decapitate yourself with a tree branch.

This brings me to my last point, which is that I need a dog. Two real reasons:
  1. Night running might not be so scary with a pooch
  2. I would totally get all the dudes
  3. I could participate in this

The first week back running

When you first start running after you haven't...
Yeahhhh I didn't know I had some ligaments in my ankles until I stood up from being asleep. There was this little dance I had to do to sit down on my bed again. I need to remember to test out what hurts first and then stand up.

Also, why are my knees on fire after I run? It's not like they hurt... they're just so hot!

And when you google search "Diary of a Bad White Runner" so many hilarious, inappropriate, and irrelevant things pop up. But so does some useful information. Today I found on runner's world that the 15 best foods for runners are:

  1. Almonds
  2. Eggs
  3. Sweet Potatoes
  4. Whole Grain Cereal with Protein
  5. Oranges
  6. Canned Black Beans
  7. Mixed salad greens
  8. Salmon
  9. Whole Grain bread
  10. Frozen Stir-fry veggies
  11. Whole grain pasta
  12. Chicken
  13. Frozen mixed berries
  14. Dark Chocolate
  15. Low-fat yogurt
Too bad margaritas are not on there...
